However Nyngan Police Sergeant Tony Wood said this reflects the community working with police to drive down crime. 

The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) published their latest quarterly report which examined crime trends for the 12 months to September 2018.

Across the Far West and Orana cases of domestic violence related assault experienced a spike, increasing 20.1 per cent from 1159 incidents to 1392.

In the Bogan Shire LGA in the year to September 2018 there were 27 recorded incidents of domestic assaults, eight more than the year before.  

Sergeant Wood said while there had been an upward trend in cases of domestic related assault, this could be due to victims becoming more willing to report the incidents to police.

“We always encourage reporting, we find that we would rather people report domestic violence than keep it hidden away,” Sgt Wood said.

“Statistics are still relatively low but we find it rewarding that there are people out there that are prepared to come forward and work with us,” he said. 

The BOCSAR data also shows that incidents of indecent assault, act of indecency and other sexual offences decreased in the Bogan LGA with three recorded incidences compared to five the previous year. 

Incidents of break and enter (dwelling and non-dwelling) increased in the Bogan LGA from 16 to 24.

Sgt Wood said these figures are very low on a state-wide basis, and while they are still concerning it’s something that has been easily targeted. 

“We have clusters depending on who is in town and who has been released from prison and we’ve been pretty successful working with the community to bringing a stop to it,” Sgt Wood said.  

Overall Sergeant Wood said the Bogan Shire LGA has one of the lowest crime rates in the western region, which is due to the nature of the town. 

 “A lot of western towns do have some crime problems and a lot of that is associated with poverty and social dysfunction,” Sgt Wood said. 

“Nyngan doesn’t have that, Nyngan has a strong social fabric, good and viable economic base and as a result we see that Nyngan is very low in crime rates, compared to other towns in the western area,” he said.
