The NSW Police Force’s Operation Safe Arrival commenced on December 21 and and concluded on January 2, with Central North Highway Patrol Supervisor, Sergeant David Thomas praising motorists for driving to the law.
The 12-day police operation saw an increased police presence and double demerit points in place for speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.
In the Central North Police District, which covers the Bogan, Bourke, Brewarrina, Cobar and Walgett local government areas, 39 motorists were caught speeding and police issued five infringements for drivers or passengers who were not wearing a seatbelt.
In addition, a further 63 infringements were issued to motorists for a range of offences (other than speeding).
Overall in the Western region 35,254 breath tests were conducted, with 2437 in the Central North Police District.
Sergeant Thomas said it had been a very successful operation by NSW Police with infringement notices and fatalities down compared to 2017.

“Overall NSW Police are pleased with how the operation was conducted, which saw less major crashes and major injuries,” Sergeant Thomas said.
“Over the same period last year there were 25 fatalities, compared to this year, although not acceptable, there were six fatalities.”
“Of these there was only one in the western region.”
“The trend last year was country people dying on country roads, so we’ve really turned that around,” he said.
Sergeant Thomas is still reminding people to take the same level of care on the roads, and that the next traffic operation Safe Return will be in place between January 25 and February 2.
“At the end of the school holidays and Australia Day people can expect the same with RBT in place, enforced road rules, and double demerits will apply to speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.”
