GIVIT’s NSW Drought Manager Scott Barrett said the generous support of the NSW Government had helped GIVIT reach its milestone one million donations.
“With the Government’s support we have been able to assist families, farmers and communities facing extreme hardship in the ongoing drought through the simple act of giving an item that is needed,’’ he said.
“GIVIT has been able to make genuine and significant differences to people right across NSW.
“We’ve been able to provide an air-conditioned donga to be used as a school house for a family near Mt Hope; tens of thousands of dollars in shopping vouchers for groceries, water and fuel; and uniforms and stationery items for rural kids to be able to return to school well resourced.
In Nyngan the organisation has been able to support the Barnardos' breakfast program, on behalf of AGL and are now seeking support for Nyngan children suffering from the drought, through donations in the form of food vouchers.
"Children from farming families are often engaged in feeding stock and domestic animals and general farm duties before they get on the school bus," a GIVIT spokesperson said.
"They have usually done a days work before they get to town on the school bus. We try to relieve the morning pressures with the young people in the form of nutritious food, providing opportunities for them to talk, have fun and set goals for a positive day at school.
GIVIT said the donation of vouchers, preferably for IGA or Foodworks helps to purchase items locally.
Mr Barrett said more than $133,000 had been spent in rural and regional NSW towns in the past six months.
