The District Manager of the North West Zone and Bogan District NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), Paul Metcalfe said while some districts have extended their bush fire danger period due to a high potential fire risk, this is not the case in the North West and Bogan zone. 

"The requirement for fire permits in Coonamble, Walgett, Warren, and Bogan Shires has ended, therefore land owners wishing to burn will no longer need to get a permit to light a fire," Mr Metcalfe said.

Fire permits are required for all fires lit in the open during the bush fire danger period which generally runs from October 1 to March 31 each year.

Mr Metcalfe has urged residents however that those planning to burn outside the shires of Bogan, Coonamble, Walgett and Warren should contact their local RFS District Office to check their nearest requirements, as a permit may be required. 

"I would like to remind everyone that the requirement for notification of your intent to burn is compulsory all year-round," he said.

"This notification needs to be provided to the local Rural Fire Service and all your adjoining neighbours at least 24 hours prior to burning.

He said that notifications are maintained at a local level and important to prevent unnecessary call outs for volunteers when spoke plumes and fires are reported by those passing by.
