It was a pleasure to relax in the colourful and interesting garden with a large number of plants flowering, and to discover novelty corners where there 'lived' many little animals including meerkats, geese, a rooster, two snowy white lambs and even an echidna.
We appreciated these delightful garden collections displayed with imagination and much effort.
During the meeting, a helpful article was read out from 'Bourke's Backyard' concerning care of gardens during dry times. It was 'Don's top 10 water-wise tips' which gave us many ideas on caring and maintaining our gardens, as well as the best use of water.
He suggests giving priority to deep-soaking of trees and shrubs, use of a wetting agent around plants, have glazed or plastic pots instead of terracotta or concrete pots for less evaporation, garden in small spaces, and forget about the lawn which hopefully will bounce back when it rains. And that's operative word 'rain' which we hope will come soon.
Plans for our Flower Show in the Town Hall on October 5, were discussed and it was decided to receive entries from 10am to noon, with opening to the public from 1.30pm to 4pm.
Various sections for roses, bulbs, ferns, pot plants and a wide range of other plants will be available for entry. Afternoon tea to be served in the supper room.
Invitations to various Open Gardens in the district were received, and it was decided to go on two day trips this year instead of the overnight trip to Crookwell. Bilby Blooms Open Day, Binnaway on September 28. Cost $50, and you need to pay for your own lunch and afternoon tea. Payment due by September 23. Orange Open Gardens on November 9. Cost $80 includes entries to all gardens. Cost of lunch will be available closer to the day.
Congratulations to raffle winners Lynn Hodge and Kay Linke.
The next meeting of the Garden Club will be held at the home of Di Thenberg, 36 Cathundril Street, Nyngan, on Monday, September 23 at 12 noon. New members are always welcome.
