Operation Safe Return will be underway on January 24, with double demerit points in force across the state until 11.59pm on January 27.

NSW Police are encouraging motorists in the Central North Police District to take care on the roads.

"NSW Police will be conducting operation Safe Return, which coincides with the end of the school holidays, a time when a number of people are returning home," Nyngan Police Sergeant Tony Wood said.

Police will be targeting fatigue, speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and alcohol related offences, with double points to be given to those who are caught doing the wrong thing.

"We encourage people to plan their trips, don't rush and take appropriate rest breaks," Sergeant Wood said.

The operation will see an increased police presence on the roads across the region to ensure Australia Day celebrations stick to the true spirit of mateship.

Sergeant Wood has encouraged anyone who is planning on having a drink this Australia Day to plan ahead and drink in moderation.

"With Australia Day approaching police encourage members of the community to act responsibly and not engage in excessive consumption of alcohol, have a plan B to get home, but also enjoy the day and not ruin it for anyone else," he said.

NSW Police said they hope motorists are heeding safety messages as poor driving behaviour was on the decline during the Christmas/New Year period.

Operation Safe Arrival concluded on January 1, following 13 days of high-visibility policing that was targeting road safety.

Police said there were 14 drink driving offences detected, 22 traffic charges, 379 speed infringements, 18 restraint infringements and 347 other tickets issued during the operation.

Across the state, there were 882 major crashes and 11 people died on the roads over the period of the operation.

Police conducted more than 525,000 breath tests and recorded 11,722 speed infringements and 721 drink driving charges.
