And it's appeared in Tasmania - and in parts of Victoria, too.
The major road - from Holts Flat (where it joins the Snowy Mountains Highway) south to the Victorian border - has reopened but traffic is affected in both directions due to heavy snowfall in the region.
It's not just the roads affected with blackouts affecting electricity supply for much of the day, too.
Bombala resident Sally-Ann Thompson, who sent in the above photos to the Bombala Times, said she estimated around 10cm (four inches) had fallen already, and while the sun poked its face out briefly, the white stuff was falling with a vengeance.
"Cars were stuck on the Maybe St hill and I was in second gear all the way home - it was building up on the car even while being driven! Never seen it like this before."
There were firsts in Tasmania also where Launceston experienced its most significant snowfall since the early 1970s, with 20 centimetres also reported around Scottsdale and 30 centimetres at Great Lake.
Caused by very cold Antarctic air swirling around a low-pressure system to the east of the state, Bureau of Meteorology supervising meteorologist Simon Louis said it was a most unusual situation.
"For Launceston it's actually quite rare to see snow falling in the CBD and even rarer to see it settling on the ground.
"From our records it seems like this is the most significant event there since at least early 1970s, and the most comparable event we've found dates all the way back to 1921."
