Teachers, students and other staff must adhere to guidelines provided by NSW Health and the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC).
Under the updated guidelines parents and carers will be allowed on school premises during orientation days to drop off their children provided they are starting preschool, kindergarten or Years 1, 2 and 7.
Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders says that it is important for parents to be present on the first day of school.
"The first day of school is incredibly exciting for students and parents, I am thrilled that NSW Government has been able to work with the community and NSW Health to deliver a result that means parents and carers can be a part of this important day," Mr Saunders said.
Parents and carers must adhere to social distancing requirements and hygiene measures implemented by the schools and the education department.
Starting kindergarten is an important milestone in a child's school life and Mr Saunders feels that it is great that parents can now be present.
"There was some disruption to some schools' orientation events but it is great that kids will be able to have family with them, especially for those taking their first steps into big school or high school," Mr Saunders said.
Parents, students and teachers will not be required to wear a face mask to school.
Parents are asked to avoid coming on to school ground unless the visit complies with the current school guidelines, such as volunteering at the school canteen or visiting the uniform shop.
Under the new guidelines sporting carnivals, excursions, overnight camps and concerts all can be held if a COVID Safety Plan is in place.
