Nyngan NSW Fire and Rescue reminding residents to prepare and remain vigilant

With below-average rainfall and a dry winter causing fire fuel to become dry, Nyngan Fire Station Captain Rob Avard is reminding residents to remain vigilant and prepare for the season. 

“Residents need to be having talks now about what they are going to do when there are fires in the area,” Captain Avard said.

“I urge households to update or create a fire and evacuation plan and make sure the whole family knows what to do when faced with a fire,” he said.

Captain Avard said in the lead-up to the warmer season people should look at any vegetation around properties to prepare for fires, which can strike at a moments notice. 

“This includes trimming overhanging trees and branches, mowing grass and removing flammable materials from around your home, clearing debris and leaves from gutters and  ensuring you have a sturdy hose that can reach all around your home,” Captain Avard said.

“In particular if people are going to use barbecues make sure they are in a safe manner.”

“Ensure they are connected to the gas bottle securely, hoses show no signs of wear or tear and make sure they are clean,” he said. 

Captain Avard also advised the Nyngan community to know where their closest fire hydrant is and to ensure it remains visible if firefighters are called. 

“I want to remind residents that grass fires are just as dangerous as house fires and cause a lot of damage and even death,” Captain Avard said.
