Hear our Heart bus visits Nyngan to test children's ears

The mobile service held a community day at the Nyngan Health Service on Monday, May 12.

While it was day two of the Nyngan Show, Hear our Heart media officer Virginia Redenbach said they still tested many children from as far as Cobar.

"That parent [from Cobar] was so grateful that they even took the time to personally send a word of thanks to our Facebook page for travelling out to Nyngan, as medical services to rural communities is sometimes inconsistent," she said.

"We also had fantastic support on the day with many local visitors including the mayor Ray Donald, director of children's services Tracey Hobday and interest from acting principal at St Joseph's Brad Toole and Joanne Deebank."

Ms Redenbach said Hear our Heart would not be possible without partnerships in the communities they service.

"We are thrilled to have a great partnership with the Community Nurse Catherine Healy and are grateful for her assistance in organising the Multipurpose centre for the Hear our Heart ear bus to test at," she said.

"We would also like to thank RIDBC North Rocks for providing Mrs Karen Campbell from Paediatric Audiologists.

"With community partnerships and support it is hoped we will be able to provide a community day of testing once a month in Nyngan, however it's early days yet."

The volunteer community-funded project was established by hearing support teachers who identified that regular hearing checks were not occurring in their communities.

As a result the Hear Our Heart charity seeks to provide support with the identification, treatment pathway and improvement of educational outcomes for children involved.

The Hear Our Hearts bus project is not for profit and not government funded and relies on donations and fundraising to allow it to continue.
